At the age of 69, the 2013 U.S. Senior Amateur champion is returning to the U.S. Senior Open for a seventh time. Hanzel survived a 6-for-5 playoff at Miami Valley Golf Club after posting a 70. Hanzel is the only player in USGA history to qualify for match play in the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Mid-Amateur and U.S. Senior Amater in the same year (2012). He also was the low amateur in the 2012 U.S. Senior Open. Hanzel won his opening-round match in the 2012 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club over current USGA Executive Committee member Andrew Biggadike. He also was the runner-up in the 2022 U.S. Senior Amateur to fellow Georgian Rusty Strawn. Hanzel, who won his Senior Amateur at Wade Hampton Golf Club in North Carolina, played his collegiate golf at Kent State University and has a golf scholarship in his name. He is a retired pulminary specialist. An Ohio native, he resides in Savannah, Ga. He is a three-time winner of the Georgia Senior Amateur. Hanzel also won the Georgia Mid-Amateur in 2004. He twice has won the Georgia State Golf Association's Tommy Barnes Award, given to the best amateur player in the state, regardless of age (2012-2013). He is a Type 1 diabetic who wears an insulin pump when he competes.
