The Windsor, Calif., resident will make his second U.S. Open start after being an alternate at both local and final qualifying. He was in a 7-for-3 playoff for the final spots in local qualifying at Yolo Fliers Club, in Woodland, Calif., on April 20. He wound up as the first alternate, edging out college basketball referee Tony Padilla. He then found his way to final qualifying, where he earned second-alternate status. He earned a tee time at Scioto when qualifier Tim Hogarth withdrew on June 25. The first alternate from the site, Chris Riley, was already in the field. Schmuhl edged Greg Bruckner in a 2-for-1 playoff for second alternate. Schmuhl is the head professional at Windsor Golf Club. He finished T-22 in the Senior PGA Championship. He also is a five-time winner of the Northern California PGA Section Championship, and he is a three-time Northern California PGA Section Player of the Year. Schmuhl has played in 15 PGA Tour events. He is a member of the Santa Rosa (Calif.) Junior College Hall of Fame.
