Cromer will make his second consecutive U.S. Senior Open start after getting into the field as the first alternate from the Durham, N.C., site. He had shot a 71 at Treyburn Country Club after posting a 72 at Florence (S.C.) Country Club. Cromer was drafted in the 65th round of 1988 the Major League Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Lexington (S.C.) High School. But he chose to pitch for the University of South Carolina from 1989-92 before joining the Atlanta Braves organization. He was a right-handed reliever. He pitched for two seasons in the minor leagues, getting as high as Class A ball with Macon, Ga., in the South-Atlantic League. He owned a career mark of 4-5 with a 4.57 ERA. Two other brothers, Tripp and D.T., made big-league rosters with the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. Another brother, Brandon, was the top pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1992 draft. Burke decided to become a certified PGA professional, eventually becoming the head pro at Mid Carolina Club. Cromer's father also played minor-league baseball before becoming a coach at both South Carolina (freshman team) and Lake City (S.C.) High School.
