Local Qualifying: Shot 72 at Indian River Club, in Vero Beach, Fla., on May 7
Final Qualifying: Shot 71 at The Bear's Club, in Jupiter, Fla., on June 3
What are the odds a player gets into the U.S. Senior Open field as the second alternate from both local and final qualifying? Jerry Spring did just that. He carded a 72 at Indian River Club, in Vero Beach, Fla., to earn second-alternate status at his local qualifier. Then he got into final qualifying at The Bear's Club, in Jupiter, Fla. He shot 71 and was involved in a 5-for-2 playoff for the final two qualifying spots, but wound up as the second alternate. The Wellington, Fla., resident earned his second U.S. Senior Open start when Steve Stricker withdrew on June 29. Springer has played in PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Canada events. Springer also has competed on the Golden Bear Tour in Florida.
