The former Stanford University standout and USA Walker Cup competitor will make his fourth consecutive U.S. Senior Open start after posting even-par 71 at the Country Club of Colorado on June 3. Begay is one of the few Native Americans to have played on the PGA Tour. He now serves as a golf analyst for Golf Channel and NBC. The native of Albuquerque, N.M., was a three-time All-American at Stanford and teammate of Tiger Woods. He was a member of the 1994 NCAA championship team. He also represented the USA in the 1995 Walker Cup Match in Wales. He turned professional in 1995 and three years later carded a 59 in the Nike Dominion Open on what is now the Korn Ferry Tour. Four of Begay's five professional wins have been on the PGA Tour, including the 2000 Fed Ex St. Jude Classic and Canon Greater Hartford Open. He finished eighth in the 2000 PGA Championship. He also was a member of the victorious 2000 U.S. Presidents Cup Team. In 2014, he suffered a heart attack while practicing at Dallas National Golf Club and he underwent surgery. A stent was placed in his right coronary artery. Begay also established the Notah Begay III Foundation to provide health and wellness to the Native American Community.
