Appleby will make his fifth consecutive start in the U.S. Senior Open. Born in Victoria, Appleby grew up on a dairy farm and would often hit golf balls from paddock to paddock after his chores were concluded. He also played Australian rules football as a youth before turning his full-time attention to golf. He turned professional in 1992 and worked his way up the ranks to the PGA Tour, where he registered nine of his 20 worldwide victories. He twice claimed the Shell Houston Open. His last triumph came in the 2010 Greenbrier Classic, where he clsoed with a 59 to edge Jeff Overton by a stroke. He owns four top-10 finishes in majors, in cluding a share of second in The Open Championship in 2002. This came four years after his first wife, Renay, was struck and killed by a taxicab outside of London's Waterloo station. He remarried in 2002. Now a resident of Orlando, Fla., Appleby became close to Payne Stewart's family, and after the golfer's tragic death in a plane crash four months after winning his second U.S. Open, Appleby provided much-needed comfort to Payne's two children. Appleby also is a big fan of auto racing.
