The 11-time winner on the European Tour (now DP World Tour) is set to compete in his fifth U.S. Senior Open. His last victory on that circuit came in the 2010 Dubai World Championship in a playoff over Ian Poulter. Karlsson's introduction to the game came through his father, Bjorn, who was the greenkeeper at the local club in Katrineholm, the small town where he was born. As a 19-year-old amateur, he became the sixth Swedish player to complete 72 holes in The Open Championship, accomplishing the feat in 1989 at Royal Troon. He turne professional later that year. Karlsson owns four top-10 finishes in majors, including a share of fourth in the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. That year, he finished in the top 10 of three of the four majors. He represented Europe in the 2006 and 2008 Ryder Cups, and served as Thomas Bjorn's vice captain for the 2018 Ryder Cup, and did the same for Padraig Harrington in the 2020 competition.
