The affable and engaging Mediate nearly pulled off an upset of Tiger Woods in the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, taking the world No. 1 playing on one good leg to the 19th hole of the 18-hole Monday playoff. Woods made a 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force the playoff. Mediate, a former Florida Southern University All-American, grew up in suburban Pittsburgh. Mediate and future two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen led Florida Southern to the NCAA Division II title in 1985. Mediate's professional career was marred by back issues. But he managed to produce six victories, the last coming in the 2010 Frys.com Open. He has since added five PGA Tour Champions titles, the last coming in the 2024 Constellation Furyk & Friends in a playoff over Bob Estes. His lone senior major came in the 2016 Senior PGA Championship.
