2024 U.S Senior Open Registered Volunteer FAQ's
Committee Assignments and Volunteer Schedules
Committee assignments can be seen on your volunteer profile.
Volunteer schedules are now available on your volunteer profile.
Your committee chair contact information is available on the home screen of your volunteer profile.
Your committee chair will check in with you periodically should you need to take a short break for a snack, drink, trip to the restroom, etc. You may also bring a chair (compliant with our championship regulations) to use throughout your shift.
If you’d like to watch golf, shop in the merchandise pavilion, etc. those should be done before or after your shift, not on a break.
Volunteer Apparel
Volunteer apparel packages will be shipped to all volunteers in late May 2024.
All volunteers are required to wear the provided volunteer apparel with khaki, golf appropriate bottoms when on shift. Khaki pants, shorts, capris, and skorts are all acceptable, as long as they are of appropriate length.
Closed toe, comfortable shoes are recommended for all volunteers. Depending on your assignment, you may be standing for long periods of time, or walking along uneven ground. Golf shoes WITHOUT metal spikes are permitted.
All headwear should have the 2024 U.S. Senior Open logo, or no logo at all. If there is a different style preferred than the baseball cap/visor included in the volunteer package, you may purchase another option in the merchandise pavilion.
In the event of inclement weather, volunteers are permitted to wear their own rain jacket / rain pants in any color.
The volunteer golf shirt is navy, and the pullover layer is light blue.
Unfortunately, the window to purchase additional volunteer apparel items has passed. Additional shirts will be available on a first come first serve basis in the merchandise pavilion the week of the championship. We will provide additional information and hours of operation closer to the championship.
Apparel exchanges will be offered in the merchandise pavilion the week of the championship. Exchanges are offered on a first come first serve basis. Items cannot be reserved ahead of time. We will provide additional information and hours of operation closer to the championship.
If you’d like to come as a fan before or after your shift, we do not require you to change out of your volunteer uniform. However, please remember that when you are in uniform, you are representing the USGA and the championship, and fans may approach you with questions, etc. If you are attending the championship on a day when you are not scheduled at all, please do not wear your volunteer apparel.
Parking
All volunteers will be parking at LOT J (Fort Adams State Park). The west lawn at Fort Adams (LOT J) will be exclusively for volunteers. Each volunteer will receive a weekly LOT J parking pass in their credential packet, which will be mailed in early June. As you drive to LOT J, please have your parking pass clearly visible, and please make sure to follow all signage and parking attendants. Upon parking, volunteers will go through security screening and have their credential scanned before boarding a shuttle to the championship grounds. This will be a short shuttle ride, approximately 5-10 minutes.
Once on the championship grounds, it will be about a 5-7 minute walk to Volunteer Headquarters.
LOT J shuttles will begin running at 5am every morning and will run continuously throughout the day until one hour after play ends.
General championship bike parking will be designated at Brenton Point State Park. Bikes will be permitted in LOT J as long as you have a LOT J pass to present for entry. There will not be designated bike parking at LOT J, therefore volunteers are responsible for finding a place to secure their bike. Bikes, E-Bikes, Scooters, etc. are NOT permitted on the championship grounds at any time.
Volunteers getting a ride to the championship can be dropped off in LOT J as long as the car is displaying a LOT J pass. Otherwise, general championship Ride Share / Passenger Drop-Off will be located at Brenton Point State Park. Please note it is about a 15-minute walk from Brenton Point to Volunteer Headquarters.
Yes, ticket holders can ride with volunteers to LOT J and board the same shuttle as long as their digital ticket is ready to scan prior to boarding the shuttle.
While LOT J is in close proximity to the course, please allow ample time to account for traffic, security screening, waiting for a shuttle, the shuttle ride and the 5-minute walk to Volunteer Headquarters. The city of Newport is expecting heavier traffic than normal during the week of the championship, so please plan accordingly and leave yourself plenty of time when arriving for your shift.
Yes, you will be receiving a weekly parking pass, and you are more than welcome to use your LOT J pass and the volunteer shuttle any day (Wednesday-Sunday) to come attend as a spectator (even on the days you don’t have a volunteer shift).
Championship Access and Tickets
All volunteer credential packets will be mailed to volunteers in early June. These will contain your volunteer credential, parking pass, lunch vouchers and other pre-championship information.
Yes! We encourage you to enjoy the championship as much as possible outside of your volunteer duties. Your volunteer credential will act as your ticket into the championship, and you are welcome on site all days we are open to the public (Wednesday June 26-Sunday June 30).
Volunteers do not receive guest tickets. If you have family or friends who would like to join you at the championship, they must purchase a ticket. Tickets are currently on sale and all information can be found on our tickets page.
Children aged 17 and under are granted complimentary entry to the championship when accompanied by a ticketed or credentialed adult.
Parents/guardians of Standard Bearer volunteers will receive one (1) complimentary ticket for each day their junior is volunteering. Instructions on how to download these tickets will be emailed closer to the championship.
Junior Volunteers will receive a Lot J parking pass in their credential packets. Parents/guardians may use this pass to park in Lot J and ride the shuttle to the championship grounds with their junior.
Orientation and Training
Volunteer Orientation will be completely virtual and shared with all volunteers on June 8th. There is no live component and volunteers will have a two-week window to complete the orientation videos. The videos will cover general volunteer information as well as information specific for your committee.
When all volunteers come onsite for their first shift, they will be walked through responsibilities and provided with any additional necessary information by their committee chairs.
The Walking Scorers Committees will have mandatory onsite training sessions on Wednesday June 26th. More information about these sessions will be shared by committee chairs.
Volunteer Headquarters / Volunteer Meals
Volunteer Headquarters and Volunteer Scoring will be located on the east side of Harrison Ave. to the players right of Championship 10 Green. It is about a 5-7 minute walk to from where the volunteer shuttle drops off. Volunteers should NOT access VHQ on days when you are attending as a fan and not scheduled to volunteer.
There is no secure storage area in VHQ. Volunteers should plan to bring a small, clear bag that meets the Championship Bag Policy and keep it on them at all times. The clear backpack provided to all volunteers in your apparel package is a great option. The USGA is not responsible for anything left or lost in VHQ or Volunteer Scoring.
Volunteers will receive one lunch voucher for each shift they are assigned. These will be in your credential packets. Lunch vouchers can be redeemed at any concession on the grounds and grants volunteers each an entrée item, chips, and a drink. Volunteers will have options to choose from for their entrée item, and there will be a vegetarian option.
If a health condition requires you to bring your own food/snacks, you may do so. For admissions and security purposes, please reach out to the championship office in advance. You are not able to bring your own beverages.
There will be multiple hydration stations throughout the course. Volunteers should plan to bring a reusable water bottle (included in your volunteer package) to the championship and refill as needed. Water bottles will need to be empty upon entry to the championship. Other beverages such as coffee and soft drinks will be available in Volunteer Headquarters.
Miscellaneous
Play will continue rain or shine unless dangerous weather approaches. Volunteers should plan on being on time and ready for their shift regardless of the weather. In the event that weather causes delays or changes shift times, the championship office will communicate it to all volunteers via text message and email.
All volunteers are expected to walk to their volunteer post from their check in location. There will be disability shuttles running between pre-determined spots around the course that may help you get closer to your post, but there are not shuttles dedicated to taking volunteers to their positions. Maps with walking instructions based on your assignment will be provided.
Yes. Volunteers are permitted to bring a chair and should plan to bring one if needed as only a limited number of committees have chairs provided. Chairs must be small and compact and adhere to the championship prohibited items policy.
Volunteers should plan to be onsite 15-30 minutes before your shift start time. Remember to factor in time to park, go through security, shuttle, and walk to VHQ. If there is anything you’d like to do onsite / in VHQ before your shift (ie. get lunch, coffee, grab snacks) that should be done before checking in for your shift. You are expected to be ready to go at the start time of your shift.
If you are running late, notify your committee chair. Make sure to include your full name if you are texting or emailing.
